50 Days acknowledges the 1986 Victoria nurses’ strike and contemporary industrial action of New Zealand nurses in the context of contemporary feminism.

50 Days is 50 works of contemporary jewellery, with each piece representing a day of the strike. An accompanying timeline of events accompanies the work in the gallery space. Strikers on both sides of the Tasman have contributed to the pieces. Materials used are personal possessions, hospital equipment, surgical steel, silver and other semi-precious metals, sweat and tears.

More broadly the exhibited pieces are intended to contextualise the universality of ongoing struggles within female-dominated workforce sectors. Viewers are invited to take up this call to personal action, and the pieces are intended to be worn to remind us of the role we might take in the fight that has yet to be won.

(ABOUT THE ARTIST)

Justine resides in Wellington, New Zealand. Her projects focus around historical events and statistics, specifically from the perspective of women, and the facts of these events also contribute to how she selects her materials. Much of her work in the last few years has focused on the Third Suffrage Petition. She prefers to reuse existing resources wherever possible, with domestic objects and the everyday featuring regularly.
