What is a knife or when is a knife not a knife ?
Cutlers Contravention uses irony and humour to contradict the accepted functionality of cooking knives. Combining the established methods of forged, pattern welded steel with the principals of “unmaking”, this project seeks to disturb and disrupt the conventional aesthetic correctness of hand made kitchen knives. |

(ABOUT THE ARTISTS)
Nick Hackett is a Melbourne based metalwork artist. His undergraduate studies in Jewellery and Metalsmithing in the 1980’s, moved into furniture production and Blacksmithing. Since 1989 his practice has been predominantly project based, accepting private, public and corporate commissions in Melbourne, regional Victoria, interstate and overseas. Those works have been mainly architectural ironwork, furniture and sculpture. Nick has maintained a parallel contemporary art practice, exhibiting occasionally in Melbourne. In 2014, “ Unmaking “ was Nick’s major project in his MA (Art in Public Space) at RMIT University. Nick is currently Technical Officer in the Jewellery program at Melbourne Polytechnic |
