Ground is an exhibition of the most recent outcomes of Lindy McSwan’s MFA research at RMIT. Her research has a strong material focus expressing aspects of steel as a material in the context of its origin as a natural resource, dug from beneath the earth’s surface, upon which substantial industries were established in Australia. Iron ore and the subsequent materials that make steel are a critical part this practice led research.
The work presented reflects on field trips to the Whyalla and Port Kembla steelworks. Observations of the steelworks buildings, structures, forms and patina, developed over a long history of industry at these sites, inform this work. Around the steelworks and in darkened interiors monumental industrial vessels play a part in the production process carrying materials at different stages in the making of steel. |
