A solo exhibition by Australian-Indian jewellery and object maker Sarra Tzijan, showcasing new work developed during a residency in Panchgani, India.

The show displays a collection of found objects and small sculpture in response to 4 weeks spent observing and working alongside Indian tribal artists at Devrai Art Village in Panchgani, Maharashtra, India. The focus of the show is on process, materials and techniques that relate to Dhokra art; one of the earliest forms of lost wax casting. Allowing for easy reproduction of complex metal structures, Dhokra uses a process involving many controlled steps without any use of new technologies. It is rarely taught formally, rather the practice gets handed down through families within the community. Tzijan is particularly drawn to the history of the art form in relation to her own family heritage, as an Indian-Australian.

Primal Casting will be curated in collaboration with Rebecca McCauley.

(ABOUT THE ARTISTS)

Sarra Tzijan is a jewellery and object maker from Melbourne, currently based at JamFactory in Adelaide, South Australia. Tzijan's practice is focused on the combination of traditional metal working techniques with contemporary art and design. After completing a Bachelor of Communication Design at RMIT and an Advanced Diploma of Object and Jewellery Design at Melbourne Polytechnic, Tzijan unified her skills and began creating both sculptural and wearable art that expresses movement and balance.

Rebecca McCauley is an artist and writer based in Naarm, Melbourne. Graduating with a Masters in Art Curatorship she is interested in the intersections of design, museums and nature, and has recently had work associated with projects at Cool Change Contemporary (WA), Kings Artist Run (VIC), Mona Foma (TAS) and Un Magazine. Drawing from her long friendship with Tzijan, she is collaborating on the curation of Primal Casting.
